Prestige De Santos, was born and raised in East London. Small city, big dreams. Her musical sound could be described as a fusion of hip hop, mixed with grime, blended with consciousness, topped off with a sprinkling of sexy sophistication. Prestige got her first taste of holding the mic in 2001, during her group performance of SO SOLID’S ’21 SECONDS’ at her Essex secondary school Redden Court. Going by the stage name of ‘LADY RASCAL’ during her early teen years, she developed a great thirst for music. Performing at school plays and continually developing her creative writing skills, until eventually evolving into the artist ‘PRESTIGE’ during the year of 2003.
Hip Hop would always be her first choice to demonstrate her lyrical ability, Prestige was initially heavily influenced by Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, Da Brat, Queen Latifah, Tracy Chapman and Lauryn Hill. Eager to express her deep thinking side, she went on to record her very own version of Tracy Chapman’s hit single ‘FAST CAR’ which was proven to be a hit both with her family and her peers.
At this particular stage in her musical career (mid teens) there was an overpowering movement that was flooding the scene…..Grime music. Prestige rapidly became a fan of this new exciting genre. She featured on Big Jon’s underground smash ‘GUTTER RIDDIM’ in early 2006 with Griminal, although this was never released it never hindered her pursuit. Prestige recorded a number of freestyles over well known grime instrumentals, including RUFF SQUAD’S ‘HAVANA’ and KAMIKAZE’S ‘GHETTO KYOTE’.
Prestige was always willing to try something different and had a keen desire to produce her own music, experimenting with new sounds. After purchasing the software Magix Music Maker, Prestige was able to produce her very first song ‘GHETTO STRAWBERRIES’ featuring the then rapper CAJEVARA, now founder of ASK YOUR GIRL an independent record label/clothing range. At the time Ghetto Strawberries was refreshing and current, with it’s ‘Boy meets girl theme’. It was a significant platform for Prestige to display her musical versatility.
It came to a point however, where her music had to take a back seat whilst she studied for her Law degree in Luton. “Three years that I put the mic down, so my family could see me in my cap and my gown” During her time at the UNIVERSITY OF BEDFORDSHIRE, Prestige continued to portray her artistic character, performing in talent shows, recording with producers such as CARNS HILL & 2LUVLY (SPAZ BEATZ) She was also determined to push the boundaries, starring as the promiscuous lead role in a short film, UNI LYFE.
Her debut mixtape, entitled ‘I AM PRESTIGE’ hosted by New York’s finest female DJ (The Queen of Queens) DJ TATI, was released for the world to hear in July 2011 via the UK’s Number one mixtape site, HOODTAPES.CO.UK
